Why Quiet Time With God Matters More When Life Gets Busy
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Nine months disappeared, and we felt it. Coming back to the Restored Podcast means being honest about the life changes that hit our house all at once and the spiritual lessons we had to relearn the hard way.
We talk about our son graduating, stepping into full-time work, and realizing early that a “dream job” can change once it becomes real life. That opens a bigger conversation about identity, responsibility, and why career change does not have to be failure. We also share what it has been like for Darcie to return to full-time work after years at home, and how God opened a door for her to teach preschool at a Christian academy where faith and early childhood education go hand in hand.
But the heart of this conversation is spiritual rest. When work gets loud and schedules get packed, quiet time is often the first thing to slip, and we’ve seen how quickly that leads to burnout, irritability, and anxiety. We dig into prayer, Bible reading, and spiritual disciplines that keep us grounded, plus the difference between physical rest and the deeper truth that Jesus is our Sabbath. If you’ve been running on fumes, we want you to hear this: peace is available, and it is practical.
Subscribe, share this with someone who needs encouragement, and reach out with your testimony or a prayer request so we can believe with you.
Welcome Back After Long Break
SPEAKER_00Welcome back.
SPEAKER_01Hey, what's up? It's been a minute.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the Restored Podcast. My name is Frank, and I'm here with my wife, Darcy, and we're your hosts.
SPEAKER_01Hey.
SPEAKER_00I thought you were going to say something.
SPEAKER_01Oh no.
SPEAKER_00You look like you wanted to say something.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm good.
SPEAKER_00After nine months, you have nothing to say.
SPEAKER_01I have a lot to say, just not right in a second.
SPEAKER_00So, first off, I want to apologize to all of the listeners for being such a long break in between episodes. What I intended on just being a two to three week break so that I could focus more on the podcast and give it the attention that it deserves ended up being nine months.
SPEAKER_01My bad. That's partly my fault.
Helping A Teen Rethink Career
SPEAKER_00Well, it's all of our fault. And when I say all, I mean me and me and you. But during that nine months time, our family has gone through some changes and we're entering in or we entered into a new, you know, season of life. Our son graduated high school last year, about the time that we stopped recording. He's still living at home with us, but he's working a full-time job.
SPEAKER_01Yep. And welding. And we thought he found his dream career, but he's found out real quickly that's not so much his dream career anymore.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, I want to say since seventh grade, he always that's what he wanted to do, and he did it all throughout high school. And but I guess whenever you start working a full-time job and you're doing it eight hours a day, five days a week. Yeah, then you It's a little different than just one class in school and building a project after school. But he came to me a couple weeks ago and he's like, Dad, or not a couple weeks, a couple months ago. And he's like, Dad, I don't wanna I don't want to weld for the rest of my life. He goes, I'll be burning rods when I'm 70, and I don't want to do that.
SPEAKER_01Well, thankfully he had this epiphany at 18, 19, and not in his mid-30s or 40s.
SPEAKER_00And that's exactly what I told him. I said, son, you're young, you have your whole life ahead of you. Yes, time flies, but you have so much in front of you, and now's the time to figure out what you do want to do. And not that you can't make a career change midlife, but it's so much easier, you know, to get into something that you love instead of just sticking with it, and then whenever you're responsible for other mouths to feed and put a roof over their head, you know, that's not the time to be making major career changes because you hate your job that you hated for years, but you stuck with it because I mean let's face it, that's what a lot of people do, especially guys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They will stick with something even though they hate it, they can't stand it.
SPEAKER_01Because it's easier than changing, making a change.
SPEAKER_00Well, not only that it's easier than make to than making a change, it's just that's what we do. We are to provide, we are to do this, and so this is who I am, this is what I'm doing. I'm gonna stick with it even though I don't like it.
SPEAKER_01But right.
SPEAKER_00So he's got some things that he's working on for the future, and we're excited for him on that. Hopefully, we will be putting that out there for everybody to know his plans here soon.
SPEAKER_01I hope so.
SPEAKER_00And then the other change is you went back to work full-time outside of the house after being stay-at-home mom for 18 years.
SPEAKER_01Right. Now, during that 18 years, there were a couple times I was a teacher for a little bit, I worked for you more than I just being a stay-at-home mom. I actually went to work for our company.
SPEAKER_00But even that, I mean, we would go together to and from work, we were at the office together all day, so it it wasn't like it is now to where you can't even contact me. And I do mine.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yep, you can't even contact me or call me or text me during the day most of the time.
SPEAKER_00But it's been an adjustment because now God has blessed me with the way that I make my income now to where I'm not out hustling for 60 hours a week like I was before. Yeah. I mean, before, especially when Hayden was younger, I was working six, seven days a week. Six, seven. Stop it. Sorry, I had to put that in there. Um, I was, you know, sometimes working seven days a week. And now I have a lot more downtime than anybody else in the house. So I've tried helping to pick up the slack around the house.
SPEAKER_01We've kind of switched roles a little bit. You handle the house and I work all day.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Me and the dishwasher and the washing machine and the dryer. We've all become pretty tight.
SPEAKER_01I love it.
SPEAKER_00Do you?
SPEAKER_01I do.
SPEAKER_00You better.
SPEAKER_01I'm grateful for it.
Teaching Preschool As A Calling
SPEAKER_00So tell us what are you doing now?
SPEAKER_01I am a preschool teacher.
SPEAKER_00Preschool? What ages do you teach?
SPEAKER_01Three and four-year-olds.
SPEAKER_00What are you teaching a three and four-year-old?
SPEAKER_01Well, first off, let me say as you know, because I know you're hitting at it, it's not a daycare. It's a Christian academy, an early ed early childhood education academy. So I do teach them math and science and literacy and spiritual curriculum.
SPEAKER_00You know, I think it's amazing. Whenever you started looking for a job, now, of course, you flirted with the idea of going back to teaching preschool, and you were looking at those jobs, but you weren't just looking at that. You were looking and applying for different office positions, all kinds of things. And I mean, God really opened up the door on this to where you applied, I think you interviewed within a couple days after that, and then I was given an offer shortly after that.
SPEAKER_01So it was it was all God. And the company's a good company. They partner with uh churches and they bring preschools and early childhood education to unchurch people through the churches.
SPEAKER_00So it's pretty amazing that I mean, God let's be honest, your passion is little children.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00It always has been.
SPEAKER_01And especially if I can teach them about Jesus. That's my favorite part. Yes, I like the academic side of it, and I love the ways just to love on them, but teaching them about Jesus and seeing their faces light up and seeing them ask questions and just hunger for that. I love that.
SPEAKER_00But I told you then how God just it's amazing because he just opened up the doors for that, and that's your passion, and I firmly believe it's your calling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because you make such an impact. You always you always have when it comes to kids. It doesn't matter if we're at Walmart, church, whatever, little kids are smiling at you, little kids you don't know have never met before, run up and give you a hug. It's like they almost know they can sense that in you. And God made it so easy for you to get this job.
Ministry To Single Moms And Kids
SPEAKER_01Yeah, He did. And um my academy in particular is special. Most of them are inside churches. Mine is a freestanding academy, and we work with a nonprofit that helps single women.
SPEAKER_00The reason why she paused is because she's starting to cry. That's just Darcy. So continue on.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And they work with single women, most of whom have children, either from divorces, domestic violence.
SPEAKER_00They work with single women who are undereducated or underemployed. And to lead into what you were saying there, most of the most of the time it's women that are going through a recent divorce, or maybe it's a single mom who's been divorced for a while has just hidden a rough patch. But the majority of the kids there are related to that other nonprofit, and they are in the middle of their parents, you know, going through a divorce, custody battles.
SPEAKER_01Um a lot of domestic violence, which is I mean, that was another sign to me that that this was a God thing. And because of what we've been through, and we share our testimony all the time in hopes that it helps someone else. Well, every day I have moms come to me and I get to minister to them and love on them and love on children that are hurting, like Hayden was at one point. So I minister, not only do I teach, I minister all day, and that's a blessing.
SPEAKER_00So you're telling me that you get to do what you're passionate about, and you get to walk in your calling, God's made it to where you're getting paid to do that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's a blessing. And I am so grateful for it. No, before you say anything, there are days where I'm grateful, but I'm tired. There are days when I am grateful and I know I'm blessed, but I'm frustrated.
SPEAKER_00There's been days where I've gotten text messages. If you didn't text me so much, I'd go back and read it verbatim, but it was something like, I'm done, exclamation point. I am walking out, exclamation point, and there is nothing you can say or do, exclamation point.
Beating Burnout With Word And Prayer
SPEAKER_01That's pretty much what it said. It's pretty much how I felt. And that's not only one time that's happened. That's happened a lot during this. Have not been in the word and not in prayer like I was used to. And I haven't, I went through a time where I didn't know how to make time and I didn't make time. So I was being led by emotions instead of by the spirit.
SPEAKER_00Well, what Satan will do if he can't get you to completely walk away from your calling, if he can't completely get you to turn your back on Christ, he'll make you busy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00He'll make you busy to where you're not being as fruitful as you should be, to where you're not achieving those things in your calling, you're not taking those steps and allowing God to lead you. He'll make you busy to where you just you're tired. Yeah. And you're not doing everything that you can and should be doing for God.
SPEAKER_01And I mean, I'm the worst at like natural rest, and I am slowly learning how to find rest in Jesus. But the natural rest, I went from having you and Hayden and the dog in the house taking care of that to there are 15 to 17 kids in that class every day, plus the other classes that come with ours who talk nonstop. They want to love on me, and they don't believe in personal space. And so that was an adjustment for my body and my spirit both.
SPEAKER_00Well, you said something about making the time. I think so many of us, when we get busy, one of the first things that we stop doing is spending that time in the word. Right. And we have to do those spiritual disciplines, those those spiritual habits. We have to make those happen. Like you said, you have to make the time. Whether it's getting up an hour earlier than you normally would, or maybe you stay up an hour later than you normally would. Or you use your lunch break instead of going to a restaurant for lunch or sitting in the break room talking to friends, whatever it may be, you take that time and you you use it to get in the word, or you use it to fellowship with God, spend that time in prayer and and worship. And I know I can tell with you, most definitely, it's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or you know, it's like completely opposite. And and that's because if you're not feeding your soul and being in Christ and allowing him to speak to you, then you're not bearing the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If you're not continually being filled with the Spirit, if you're not continually being filled with God's word, then you stop bearing the fruits. And it's very, very easy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was in a dark place. I'll I'll be completely honest with you. I had seen my old before I found Christ coming back. I was angry, I was frustrated, I was tired mentally, physically, emotionally. I was so, yes, I realized, and I was like, okay, no, I have to make that time. So I get up early. Which I mean, I have to get up early anyway, but I get up even earlier. And I I spend that time because I realize I'm pouring into these babies. And if I am not filled, what am I pouring into them? So that has now become something extremely important to me.
SPEAKER_00I think it's important to note that you need physical rest as well.
SPEAKER_01Which I'm not good at.
SPEAKER_00Everybody, everybody needs physical rest. Right. Our bodies, you know, I don't know the exact, but you should be getting seven to eight hours of sleep a night. I know it changes and adjusts depending on your age, but we should be getting s seven to eight hours of sleep a night. If you're not getting seven to out eight hours of sleep a night, you know, on your off day, take a day to just chill and rest your body. We are in a fleshly body.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00But also our souls need rest.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And we're coming up on Easter, and when when Jesus died, he did away with the old covenant and he made the new covenant. And by making the new covenant, Jesus became our Sabbath.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we go to church on Sundays.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Some people go to church on Saturdays because work on Sundays or whatever. Churches have, you know, more services, but you know, for so I grew up, oh, Sunday's the Sabbath. You go to church and you rest after church. And that's all Sunday is. And while it's important to rest your body physically, our Sabbath is every day of the week. Our Sabbath is whenever we are spending time in the Word with God, whenever we are spending time praying and fellowshipping with God and worshiping. That's when our souls will be rest. Jesus tells us, all you who are weary and heavy burdened, come to me.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And I'll give you rest. And he does that. And I've noticed a difference in you.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
SPEAKER_00I can notice a difference in myself to where whenever. And and what does that rest in Jesus look like and feel like? Well, to me, when I am resting in Jesus and I'm spending time in the Word, and I'm spending time in prayer with Him, I don't have the anxiety. The anxiety is not attacking me. Um that's the big one for me.
SPEAKER_01You get peace.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. You're just peaceful and you're refreshed and you're not stressed or worried or anxious or any of that, but you're at peace because you know God is in control and you've been allowing him to show you that he's in control. And we need more of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because it's not good if you don't have it. And we're called to meet with him.
SPEAKER_00So it it's very important. And again, it's one of the first things that slip whenever you get busy, whenever and I say you, I'm not meaning just you, uh you in general, as in all of us.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00That's one of the first things that go. And I just want to encourage you. I want to encourage myself, and I want to encourage all the listeners that no matter what, do not give up that quiet time in the word. It's important. That's how Jesus speaks to you. The the Bible is God's holy word, and it's still relevant today.
SPEAKER_01It's a living word.
SPEAKER_00And if you allow him to, he will reveal things through his word that are still relevant today for you and your life.
SPEAKER_01New revelations are my favorite. I love them.
SPEAKER_00Every day. So I just want to encourage everybody, don't get out of the word. Right. Don't forsake that quiet time with God. Make an effort. Make yourself.
SPEAKER_01Even when you don't feel like it, that's when it's usually the most powerful and the most is revealed to you is when you're not feeling like it, but you do it anyway.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's slapping the devil in the face because he doesn't want you to do that. So of course those thoughts are coming into your mind. And when you say no, you take those thoughts captive and say, I'm doing this. Yep. It's slapping the devil in the face.
SPEAKER_01And I love that.
SPEAKER_00So we're back.
SPEAKER_01We are.
SPEAKER_00And moving forward, I think the plan will be to we want to release an episode every other week. This is the Restored Podcast. We will continue to share our story of restoration, how God restored us. And we want to hear other people's stories of how God restored something in their lives. And we have some guests that we will be having on soon. And I want to encourage anybody that's out there listening. If you want to share your testimony with us and on the podcast, please reach out to us on Facebook at the Restored Podcast. You can send us a direct message there, or you can send us an email at the restoredcast at gmail.com. You can also send your prayer request there because as Darcy said, she is getting up every morning now and in that word and in her prayer time.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I am.
SPEAKER_00And we won't share your prayer request with everybody unless if you ask us to. If you want us to share it to where you have more people praying, by all means we'll do that. But if not, we will just take your prayer request to God and believe for you and with you and whatever that need might be.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_00And then Outside of having other guests share their testimonies on the restored podcast, we'll just you know, we'll we'll do what we do. We'll update you on our life and kind of share what God is doing in our life and through us and hopefully it'll help you in your journey with Christ.
SPEAKER_01Right. Possibly Bible studies at some point and the hot topics.
Share The Podcast And Final Thanks
SPEAKER_00We'll hit a few hot topics. Well, I mean, I firmly believe that us as Christians, we are to influence culture. Yes. But the church for so long has allowed culture to influence the church, and that's where you see all kinds of crazy stuff happening in the church now. Yes. And I'm not gonna get into that now because we are wrapping this episode up, but maybe on an episode soon. But yes, we'll do some Bible studies and dive deep into the word. And I just invite you, if you've been touched by this episode or one of our previous episodes, and you know somebody who could, you know, somebody who would benefit from listening to it, share it with them. We appreciate each and every one of our listeners.
SPEAKER_01We just want to say thank you. Honestly, I was looking at the stats the other day and I was in awe.
SPEAKER_00Just you think they understood us in Germany?
SPEAKER_01I'm not sure, but maybe we've hit, I think, nine countries and forty-something cities, all for the glory of God.
SPEAKER_00Well, we are thankful to each and every one of you. We hope that our story has been a blessing to you, and we hope that what we continue to share on the Restored Podcast continues to be a blessing for you. So until next time, my name is Frank.
SPEAKER_01I'm Darcy.
SPEAKER_00And we'll see you in two weeks. You've been listening to the Restored Podcast.
